the last release of vanced (the one i've linked here in the main post) is still working. @dgunn 's version will stop working before this one (if it is not the latest) as when google updates youtube, older versions become unsupported at the same time. maybe it's different for vanced, and instead, because it was developed by a 3rd party, it will never stop working; but you wont be able to get

From my experience you won't get banned but your ip might get throttled but there are ways around that. I've tried that. Either Google knows the IP address of public VPN services (they probably do, it's not hard), or they do this to any IP address that downloads too much.
